Breaking the Rules! Why we talk during massage!

Are you team Jacob or Edward?

.

It seems silly but sometimes it’s just good to have a chat during your massage, although my massage teachers from school will die when they see this ().

.

Here are my top three reasons I chat with a client and why:

1. Sometimes you just need to chat. The mind-body connection is REAL (seriously!) and sometimes chatting about something light-hearted or funny can help relax clients and help them feel more comfortable. The conversation we’re having above is a great example! I mean, can you imagine what it’s like to get a massage in front of a camera? Sometimes it feels nice to be listened to by someone who cares. A good laugh can even relax you.

2. When I’m doing therapeutic work geared at making a change in the body, sometimes I like to distract my client’s mind so their brain stops focusing on the muscle that’s getting a good stretch or release. Sometimes I might ask my client to do another random task with a different body part (like wiggle the toes). Or I may talk to them about what’s going on with the muscles in their body. If you come get a massage from me you’ll probably walk out learning a little about that one muscle that feels tight. A distraction to the brain, a better result, and a little extra learning! Seems like a great deal to me!

3. If I suspect an area may feel tight or a client may experience any type of heightened sensation, I prepare my client verbally and we talk through our movements conversationally. In my opinion, pain does NOT equal gain. (I’m talking to you athletes!) Knowing a client’s discomfort or description of sensation helps me apply the appropriate therapeutic approach.
